Radio provided by people from the northern Flint Hills, for the northern Flint Hills

Here are some of the programming ideas we are looking at for our station. We want a majority of our programming to be provided by people from the northern Flint Hills, for the northern Flint Hills. But we will also offer some syndicated programming that is not available on other stations. Syndicated shows cost money and will be chosen based on our budget’s ability to afford the purchase price. If you are interested in underwriting a particular show, contact the station.

Our emphasis is developing local programming that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.  KONZ intends to be a Public Radio International (PRI) affiliate.

Local Programming

Good Morning Flint Hills!

KONZ intends to provide our listeners with a two-hour volunteer-run and produced local and state news/public affairs/market place/culture show that will run Monday through Saturday.

Other Locally Produced Programming

KONZ aims to have eight to ten hours of locally produced programming on issues ranging from public affairs and educational to common interest and documentaries each day. You can be part of this effort!

KONZ conducts citizen journalism classes each semester that train volunteers to begin developing locally-produced programming. In addition, we will have access to Agricultural Extension Service programming which was available from KKSU before its demise. In the future, KONZ plans to have a performance studio where local music, theatrical arts, and political debates can occur live.

Youth Radio

Empowering young people to plan, develop and produce programming that is meaningful to them, KONZ plans to offer one hour of youth-produced programming Monday through Friday and additional programming on the weekends.

Here are some syndicated programs KONZ would like to offer its listeners:

New America Now

New American Media Logo New America Now is an award winning, hour long, news and culture audio magazine from California’s ethnic communities. Drop in segments are available in five and nine minute modules for broadcast on public radio.

Latino USA

As It Happens

Since 1968, this current affairs program has explored the heart of a story, whether it’s happening in the streets of Belgrade, the dockyards of Vancouver, the boardrooms of Bay Street or the kitchens of Paris. Produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

CounterSpin

CounterSpin is FAIR’s weekly radio show, hosted by Janine Jackson, Steve Rendall and Peter Hart. It’s heard on more than 150 noncommercial stations across the United States and Canada. CounterSpin provides a critical examination of the major stories every week, and exposes what the mainstream media might have missed in their own coverage. Combining lively discussion and a thoughtful media critique, CounterSpin is unlike any other show on the dial.

On the Media

On the Media explores how the media “sausage” is made, casts an incisive eye on fluctuations in the marketplace of ideas, and examines threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad. For one hour a week, the show tries to lift the veil from the process of “making media,” especially news media, because it’s through that lens that we literally see the world and the world sees us.
